Village Tourism is an unforgettable experience and a great way to explore the local culture and nature. Here, guests are supposed to stay with village and experience day to today life, food culture & nature of local people. The villagers as a serve guides during stay at homestays. The homestay operators make visitor feel comfortable in every way very flexible manner. Some of the homestays traditional activities includes village walk, cultural songs and dance, milking cows and making butter, fodder collection and feeding cattle, cardamom weeding and harvesting, organising cultural festival, listening folk tales and stories, hiking pilgrimage sites, bird and butterfly watching, crossing cane and bamboo bridge, exploring local flora and fauna, preparing local food and beverages.
Kewzing is a typical quiet Bhutia village located 8 km from Ravangla in South Sikkim. It has total thirty houses in a small hamlet predominantly Buddhist culture. Here the homestays are initiated to develop and promote tourism in the area.
Located at Yuksom village in West Sikkim, to promote community based tourism in the area in the year 2002. The area was identified and provided basic training how to meet the needs of the visitors. At present there are ten homes functioning as a homestays. There is another homestay running as .Daragoan Village Retreat on the way to Yuksum-Kecheperi Lake road near Darap village.
Rey is located 21 km from Gangtok and is nestled in between world renowned monasteries Rumtek and Lingdum monastery. The area is below the Fhambong-Lho Wildlife Sanctuary which is dominant of Lepcha communities.
Less than 60 min drive from Gangtok to Pastenga village, one can see the mixed colours of Bhutia [tribal] and Rai [Nepalese] socio-cultural village life and houses that have been remained virtually unchanged for last 150 years. One can walk through the cardamom plantation to see sacred waterfalls and to observe daily lifestyle of local people. Nearby forest are rich in many medicinal herbs.
Nearly 10 km away from Pakyong, East Sikkim there are many well organised with traditional & cultural homestay have been established by private and government sponsored homestay. The place is very ideal for bird watching trail and also perfect place to start short trek route Khedi-Trek.
Similarly, there are so many homestays are developing in Sikkim and neighbouring places like in Kalimpong, Darjeeling for good response and demand of the tourist interest. Zuluk in East Sikkim and Sillarey village homestay in Pedong [Kalimpong,West Bengal] are really worth to spend time to discover hidden paradise.
Fambong-Lho Wildlife Sanctuary: It is located at a distance of 25 km distance from Gangtok. The main vegetation is oak, katus, kimbu, champa and thick bamboo groves and ferns. The sanctuary is a home of large number of wild orchids, rhododendrons etc. The richly forested area is known as home for various species of wild animals and birds. This area is located closed to Gangtok, is being developed as a short trekking trail. The best season is October and April.
Kanchendzonga National Park [KNP]: Largest area 850 sq km is bounded in North by Tent Peak and ridge of the Zemu glacier in the east by the ridge of Mountain Lamo-Angden, Mt. Pandim in south and Mt. Kanchedzonga in the west. Because of the formidable location, it remained ecologically untouched, which provides natural protection to the flora and fauna in this park. The fauna includes the Snow Leopards, Himalayan Black Bear, Barking Deer, and Red Panda, Civet Cat and many more varieties of birds, and butterflies.
Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary: Just above the Ravangla, in an area about 35,000 hectares, this is the home of Red Pandas, Leopards, Cats, Blood Peasant [State bird], Black Eagle and other animals.
Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary: It is the world of Rhododendrons in North Sikkim near Yumthang. The total area covers about 35 hectares. The fauna includes Blood Peasants, Patridges, Tige, Civets etc.
Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary: It is an area of 400 hectares around the Tsomg-mo Lake, Nathula border and other in and around of the areas. The area is home of Blood Peasants, Red Pandas and other kinds of animals.
